Curriculum Statement

At Lowther Endowed School, we see ourselves as one close-knit school family. This sense of community underpins our core philosophy: we are a small school where every member of staff knows each child personally and supports their individual growth. We are committed to ensuring that every pupil leaves Lowther with a lifelong love of learning, cherished memories, and a strong sense of self-worth.

We are passionate about developing the ability to "learn how to learn," and we place great emphasis on fostering a growth mindset. We believe that a rich and varied range of experiences — both inside and outside the classroom — helps to embed essential knowledge and skills, while also igniting a passion and thirst for learning.

Our stunning surroundings and vibrant community, steeped in history, play a central role in school life. The Lowther curriculum places a strong emphasis on sport, healthy living, environmental responsibility, and outdoor learning — areas we are continually working to strengthen. We believe this holistic approach nurtures happy, healthy, and active children — both mentally and physically — who show respect for themselves and others, feel a sense of responsibility for the world around them, and understand their place within it.

Overall curriculum aim

  • To ensure full coverage of the National Curriculum, embedded within an ambitious cross-curricular, well-sequenced programme of learning that excites and fuels independent students with high self-expectations and solid knowledge to build on;
  • To develop pupils' growth mindset and to make them resilient, creative and inquisitive learners - ready for life in the 21st century

Intent

At Lowther Endowed School, our curriculum is driven by a shared vision among pupils, parents, staff, and governors. We aim to:

  • Develop every individual's full potential while nurturing confidence, resilience, and self-belief.

  • Deliver a broad, engaging, and continually evolving curriculum that opens children’s eyes to the wider world.

  • Make meaningful use of our rich local environment and history to bring learning to life.

  • Embed friendship, kindness, and strong relationships at the heart of school life.

  • Ensure our school is a central part of the community, helping children to understand and value their place within it.

Implementation

We deliver this intent through:

  • A whole-school focus on well-being and character development, including regular opportunities to build resilience and self-esteem.

  • A creative, thematic, and cross-curricular approach that encourages curiosity and offers real-life learning experiences.

  • Planned use of local sites, community members, and historical links to enrich the curriculum in all subjects.

  • School-wide values of friendship and kindness that are consistently modelled, taught, and celebrated.

  • Active community involvement through events, partnerships, and local projects that encourage children to participate in and contribute to their wider world.

Impact

As a result of our curriculum, children at Lowther Endowed School:

  • Develop into confident, motivated learners with a strong sense of self-worth and the resilience to face challenges.

  • Leave with a broad understanding of the world and a passion for learning beyond the classroom.

  • Are knowledgeable about and proud of their local area, its history, and its significance.

  • Demonstrate kindness, empathy, and strong interpersonal skills in their relationships with others.

  • Understand their role in the school and wider community, and actively contribute as responsible, respectful citizens.
